Abstract

Historical-dialectical materialism enables a deeper understanding of social reality and its contradictions, while historical-critical pedagogy conceives education as a mediating activity developed through social practice, which constitutes both the starting point and the endpoint of the teacher’s pedagogical action. This bibliographic study aims to analyse academic production on Special Education from the perspective of Inclusive Education, in light of historical-dialectical materialism and historical-critical pedagogy. The results indicate that Special Education has been developed in schools and higher education institutions; however, significant challenges persist in the school context, considering that the pedagogical work of Special Education teachers is precarious and grounded in medical-pedagogical and psychopedagogical conceptions. It is also observed that literacy practices based on structured instructional materials entail negative consequences for students’ learning, highlighting the urgency of listening to teachers and considering their formative needs. Although advances have been made regarding access to and permanence of students in Special Education, there remains a need for a consistent discussion on Special Education from the perspective of Inclusive Education, in light of historical-dialectical materialism and historical-critical pedagogy.
