Abstract

This article discusses the results of a research that aimed to investigate the correlations between the life stories of beginning Physical Education (PE) teachers, training processes and coping with the challenges of starting to teach. The study is qualitative, with a biographical approach. A single data construction instrument was used: the narrative interview. The study was carried out with 12 beginner PE teachers, graduates of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMF), all with up to three years of professional insertion in basic school. The data show that a variety of formal, non-formal and informal training experiences are taken by teachers as significant in the process of training and professional intervention at the beginning of their careers. Such research findings suggest that life stories conform teachers with plural training experiences, with different social dispositions, which would make professional insertion trajectories a plural, situated and transferable social phenomenon, a view that would relativize temporal (chronological) markers of the teaching career cycles, as well as the characterization of more general meanings about the experience of starting a teaching career. Not only because the contexts of professional insertion are diverse, but also because teachers who start the profession are subjects who carry with them life stories and unique training assets that end up making the experience of professional insertion a very particular phenomenon.

Atualmente é professor efetivo do magistério superior da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
