Abstract

This article is part of a doctoral research, whose object focuses on the Higher Education offered in the Federal Institutes (IFs), then conceived as an alternative model to traditional research universities. In particular, the teaching diploma programs provision and the especial programs of pedagogical training, for which there’s legal obligation to reserve 20% of vacancies in the IFs (as affirmative actions). In this work, inclusion of Higher Education in the context of Professional and Technological Education was situated, challenges of implementation of teaching diploma programs in the IFs were identified, approximations and/or detachments of those programs to the ones provided by the federal universities were established and the relevance of the IFs and its programs to the improvement of general life quality, particularly in regions apart from large urban centers, were highlighted. Regarding methodological aspects, the data presented originate from documental and bibliographic research, whose analyzes were interpretated allowing the accomplishment of outlined objectives. The results indicated challenges in the maintaining and improving of the institution’s infrastructure, funding and enlargement of the numbers of teachers to meet the demands of verticalization of teaching, research and extension activities. However, the results also indicate potentialities of the IFs in providing teaching diploma degrees if assured the necessary conditions to the good working of the programs and the pedagogical work.
