Résumé

Coco is a manifestation of cultural tradition that presents a close connection between music, dance and poetry and is described as a popular play activity by its representatives. It is very common in several states in the Northeast and is considered a cultural heritage by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). This article describes and analyzes the practice of this popular manifestation in an Early Childhood Education Center (CMEI) in the city of Maceió (AL), led by a traditional master and his partner with children aged 3 to 5 years. The focus is on: the historical context of this cultural manifestation, covering the values ​​attributed to it and its social function in the past and present; the artistic, aesthetic and historical elements of coco practiced in the context of the aforementioned CMEI; and the responses and meanings attributed by the children involved.
