Abstract

This study stems from research that examines the presence of play/games in the transition from Early Childhood Education to 1st grade of Elementary School, through the lens of authors in active/critical pedagogy. The goal was to identify and discuss play/games in Early Childhood Education and in the 1st grade of Elementary School, based on the perspective of children's narratives. The hypothesis is that there is a diminished presence of play that begins in preschool and intensifies at the start of Elementary School. The research was conducted with an exploratory qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews, and involved 13 children from the last stage of Early Childhood Education, who were later enrolled in 1st grade of Elementary School. Based on Content Analysis, results from the categories "Play Culture" and "Differences between Early Childhood Education and Elementary School" are presented, which respectively highlight the children's favorite games/activities and discuss the main differences in terms of recess, playgrounds, and other school spaces. The study concludes that Early Childhood Education focuses on literacy but still incorporates play/games in its daily routine, while play in the 1st grade is more limited to recess, with a clear identification of differences in time and space for play between the two stages.
