Abstract

Early childhood education is a space-time rich in possibilities for children to build quality interactions and expand their cultural repertoires through play, a unique childhood activity. The aim of this article is to present the results of a Master's in Education study in which we sought to find out how children experience play in the context of the early childhood education institution they attend. The research involved 15 children aged between 3 and 4 from a Municipal Early Childhood Education Center in the city of Guarapuava/PR. This study, which is part of the discussions of the Early Childhood Education Studies and Research Group (GEPEDIN), adopts a qualitative approach and is based on the Sociology of Childhood and Research with Children. The text is organized in two sections: in the first, we reflect on the commitment that Early Childhood Education should have with the space-time dedicated to play, understood as preponderant in the social constitution of children and a fundamental practice for the production of children's cultures; in the second section, we present the results and analysis of the field research on how play is experienced and interpreted by children in the context of Early Childhood Education. The results of the research show that play in Early Childhood Education is closely related to the interactions that children build up with each other, in the experiences they have in the educational institution's spaces and in the relationships they develop with the toys available.
