The impact of teacher development on the integration of environmental education into lesson planning for early years education

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate how a teacher development course focused on Environmental Education, designed for Early Years teachers, influences their awareness of environmental importance. To this end, a case study was conducted on participatory lesson planning in a private educational group in southern Brazil. The research involved two groups of Early Years teachers: one group participated in a professional development course on education for sustainable development through interdisciplinary collaborative work, while the second group did not undergo this training. An investigative questionnaire was applied to characterize the groups, and subsequently, the lesson plans developed by these teachers were analyzed regarding their interdisciplinary planning approach, their potential to strengthen critical Environmental Education in schools, and their ability to encourage reflection on pedagogical practices. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of environmental practices in lesson planning for Early Years teachers is significantly influenced by participation in training courses. The analysis revealed that teachers who attended the professional development course showed a greater alignment between learning objectives and teaching strategies, as well as a more effective integration of collaborative and interdisciplinary activities. This highlights the importance of continuous training programs as a means of raising awareness and fostering action on environmental issues within the educational context.
