Abstract

This article investigates possibilities for addressing ethno-racial identities in science education through the decolonial research method known as escrevivência, which aims to give voice to Black women who have been historically silenced and excluded from academic spaces. The article discusses the challenges and strategies of teachers when addressing ethno-racial identities in science teaching. To this end, we proposed the production of escrevivências by Black female science teachers about how they address ethno-racial issues in their classes. Based on the narratives, it was possible to engage with the literature on themes related to the following topics: Teacher training for practices focused on ethno-racial relations; Topic selection and its connection to the official curriculum; Didactic strategies for science education aimed at ethno-racial relations; and Reflections on practice and the challenges of implementing a science education oriented toward Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations. It was possible to relate science teaching to ethno-racial issues through themes such as: ethnoastronomy, archaeoastronomy, intersectionality, gentrification, environmental racism, epistemicide, and evolution. We conclude that Black female science teachers hold valuable knowledge that can enrich the approach to ethno-racial identities in science teaching.
