Abstract

This article aims to examine healing—or great health—as the outcome of travel, shaped by the landscapes, climates, and routes traversed by Nietzsche. It seeks to show the importance the philosopher attributed to the pathos of distance as a necessary detachment from the sources of illness (symbolized by Bayreuth), making health possible through solitude. Nietzsche’s journey to Sorrento and his stay at Villa Rubinacci are discussed within the framework of a healing itinerary from the Wagnerian ailment, marked by a crisis whose enduring monument would be his book Human, All Too Human. Ultimately, the article points to Nietzsche’s philosophy of wandering as the possibility of great health.
