Abstract

This study, entitled "Democracy and Feminism: A Dialogue between Jane Addams and John Dewey," aims to develop an analysis of American pragmatism, its main theses, and, above all, to investigate the role of women in the development and systematization of this doctrine. The theme of "democracy and feminism" emerges from the fruitful dialogue between the American philosopher Jane Addams (1860-1935) and the pragmatist Dewey (1852-1959). The research investigated Jane Addams's participation and contribution to the pragmatist movement and discussed why this participation is not referenced in official historiography. The study seeks to analyze the confluences of the philosopher's ideas with John Dewey's social pragmatism and her adherence to pragmatism. The aim is to deepen the understanding of John Dewey's conception of democracy, understood as a way of life, and to articulate this conception with Addams's feminist ideals. Our working hypothesis is to argue that both democracy and feminism converged on the development of pragmatist thought and that the intellectual presence of women in this movement was crucial to the prestige and notoriety this philosophical movement gained in the first half of the 20th century. This legacy contributed to the emergence of the contemporary intellectual movement known as feminist pragmatism.
