Abstract

This paper conducts an archaeological analysis of The Invention of the Amazônia by Neide Gondim, in dialogue with Michel Foucault’s theses, particularly regarding the relationship between power and knowledge and the dynamics of exclusion that shaped the Amazônia in the Western imagination. From Foucault’s perspective, the article explores how the representation of the Amazônia relates to the construction of otherness, correlating the colonial discourse on the Amazônia with the exclusion of figures such as the madman and the criminal in Madness and Civilization. The paper also discusses the possibility of literary and epistemological resistance, highlighting the works of Euclides da Cunha and indigenous literature as examples of reinvention and contestation of dominant narratives.
