Abstract

The history of XIXth century Brazilian philosophy, as represented by authors such as Silvio Romero and Tobias Barreto, has established a negative view of such philosophy which became an unfortunate tradition that prevents an adequate understanding of the country’s philosophical past. This situation reflects on the understanding of the country’s philosophical present and future. The current paper intends to analyze some of Romero’s and Barreto’s theses which contributed to such a negativist tradition, revealing their superficiality and their mistakes on the basis of the system/context complementarity model. The main aim of the current text is to suggest the need of an urgent revaluation of the history of Brazilian philosophy.
