Abstract

The paper explores the relationship between the thought of the French philosopher Félix Guattari (1930-1992) and the Chilean poet Juan Luis Martínez (1942-1993). I analyze two of the themes or problems that appear in the encounter between them during Guattari’s visit to Chile in 1991: the conception of the author and the philosophy of the book. I suggest that there is a notorious resonance and dialogue between their critical positions on individual authorship and the traditional conception of the book. I also explore their productive differences, which relate to their various places of enunciation (France and Chile), and the radicalism with which Martínez carried out his critique of individual authorship. I finally suggest that Martínez’s artist’s books produce a materialist conception of the rhizome book.
