Abstract

In this essay I reconstruct and contrast the two conceptions of philosophy developed by Ludwig Wittgenstein in his two great philosophical periods. One of my objectives is to highlight the importance of Bertrand Russell in the gestation of both conceptions. I point out that the common element in both conceptions is the conviction that traditional philosophy arises from misunderstandings concerning, respectively, logic or the grammar of language. I hold that Wittgenstein invented a new intellectual activity, internally linked to philosophy but radically different from it, for which perhaps the best epithet is 'anti-philosophy'.
