Abstract

The text of Hebrews brings a reflection on Christ the priest “made perfect”. This text, like the other texts of Scripture, pose challenges to translators. In this article, the question of the translation of the expression chōrís hamartías and its impact on the understanding of the Christology of Hebrews is considered in a special way. The reflection follows the following steps: first, an analysis of the expression in important dictionaries; second, an explanation of the Christology of Hebrews focusing on the statement of Heb 4:15; third, the main translations of this expression are considered and the criteria that translators need to follow when translating chōrís hamartías. With this path, it is concluded that the most significant translation of what the author of Hebrews intends is “without sinning”.
