The formative potential of the axial age: rethinking the philosophy of education in the light of Karl Jaspers' thesis

Abstract

The publication of the book by Karl Jaspers, Origin and Goal of History, in 1949, as part of the discussion on the philosophies of history common to his time, systematically enshrined the thesis of the axial age. Its heuristic potential undoubtedly lies in the fact that Jaspers turned his attention to civilizations other than the Western world between the 8th and 2nd centuries BC. In doing so, the author recognizes that the birth of Christ is the founding event of the West, but it is only one of the possible narratives and not the only one. Jaspers' efforts to investigate the teachings of the great masters of humanity are part of his interest in the subject, which is why he studies and analyzes the thoughts of Socrates, Buddha, Confucius and Jesus. This article deals with analysis by Jaspers of the first three great teachers, investigating their potential for the philosophy of education.

Possui graduação em Pedagogia pelo Centro Universitário de Brusque (2007), mestrado em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2011) e doutorado em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2015) com estágio de doutorado sanduíche na Eric Voegelins Bibliothek, na Friederich Alexander Universität em Erlangen/Nürnberg (2013-2014). Atua como professora de Filosofia da Educação (Adjunta 1) junto ao departamento de EED, na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Ocupa-se com as teses de Hannah Arendt e Eric Voegelin e investiga as questões da formação humana (filosofia da educação) segundo o pensamento de Hannah Arendt.
