Abstract

The purpose of this article is to compare the philosophy theses defended at the Colégio do Maranhão in the years 1720 and 1730. Initially, we will indicate some distinctive characteristics of the works produced in the period that make them a literary genre completely different from the one practiced in contemporary universities. Then, we will see how the theses defended under the presidency of Rodrigo Homem are, in terms of content, similar to the theses defended in Portugal in the same period. Afterwards, we will indicate some elements present in the theses defended under the presidency of Bento da Fonseca that may be explained by the contact between Carmelites and Jesuits in the region.
