Abstract

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools had to close, making it difficult for children to access education. In addition to affecting formal education, social distancing measures also impacted family dynamics, with repercussions on the well-being and mental health of everyone, especially mothers, who still play the main role of parental care. The objective of this study was to investigate maternal experiences with the education of children entering elementary school during the COVID-19 pandemic. A multiple case study was conducted, in which five mothers whose children entered elementary school in a public school in Porto Alegre or its metropolitan region between 2020 and 2021 were interviewed. The data were analyzed using Thematic Analysis, which led to the construction of one theme and three subthemes. The results highlighted the helplessness experienced by the participants in the context of the pandemic and the overload of mothers who began to play the role of teachers for their own children. Based on the results, the importance of attention to maternal well-being and mental health, as well as school as a place for human development and support for the family in the process of education and social integration of the child is highlighted.
