Abstract

The translation of the Hebrew Bible requires the deep and broad knowledge of the grammar of biblical Hebrew by any translator. In addition to grammatical knowledge, it is also necessary to know the notion, even if elementary, about masoretic accentuation. The ability to work with textual criticism is equally relevant to produce a serious translation of the Hebrew biblical text. In addition to such knowledge, the decoding and interpretation of masoretic annotations (the Masorah), both those of the masora parva and those of the masora magna, help in the correct understanding of the original Hebrew text of the Bible (the Old Testament) and in the solution of complex translation situations. In addition, the notes of the Masorah reveal how the masoretes interpreted the Hebrew biblical text.

In this article, we intend to comment on certain notes of the masorah that assist in the solution of the translation of the text of the Hebrew Bible and that cannot be ignored or even neglected by any translator. Some masoretic notes are commented in the recent Antigo Testamento Interlinear Hebraico-Português (ATI) (Francisco, 2012-2020), which reveals the need to know such observations for the translation process of the Hebrew biblical text. In this scientific text, it aims to expand the knowledge referring to the Masorah, as one of the fundamental tools for the translation of the Hebrew Bible.
