Abstract

Mental health is an essential component for well-being and academic development, shaped by individual and social factors. However, medical students are particularly vulnerable to developing mental disorders due to the high academic workload, performance pressure, and social isolation. This study aims to analyze, in recent scientific literature, the main stressors and coping mechanisms adopted by medical students in response to the academic and emotional demands of medical school. This is a narrative and qualitative literature review, conducted in the PubMed database in March 2025, using the descriptors “medical students,” “mental health,” and “coping mechanisms.” Ten articles published between 2021 and 2025 were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results highlight that, in addition to academic overload, competitiveness, fear of failure, and the stigma associated with psychological distress are significant stressors. Regarding coping mechanisms, students reported both adaptive strategies — such as social support, physical activity, spirituality, and mindfulness — and maladaptive strategies, including academic avoidance, self-medication, alcohol use, and social isolation. The discussion emphasizes the urgent need for institutional interventions to promote healthier academic environments and to train faculty in the early identification of psychological distress. It is concluded that educational policies focused on self-care, resilience, and emotional well-being are essential for training physicians who are not only technically competent but also emotionally prepared for ethical and humanistic medical practice.
