Abstract

Psychoanalytic psychotherapies have been underestimated for the treatment of ADHD, with preference given to medication and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether there is evidence of the effectiveness of psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy for the treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD. A narrative literature review was conducted in the following databases, searching for published studies within the past ten years: Scopus, PubMed, and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS). Based on the used descriptors, 68 articles were initially found and retrieved. After screening the abstracts and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only nine articles were selected for this review. Six were case studies and three used naturalistic or controlled quantitative methods. From this sample, only one article did not indicate positive results from a short-term psychoanalytic intervention in treating ADHD. However, based on the results yielded by almost all of the studies analyzed, it can be acknowledged that there is some evidence of the effectiveness of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for the treatment of ADHD in young populations. By exploring the psychodynamic aspects of individuals, this approach offers a complementary alternative to medication and cognitive-behavioral therapies, allowing for a broader and more integrated view of the patient beyond their symptoms, and promoting changes in mental structures that may benefit their lives.
