Abstract

The academic life cycle is distinguished by a series of shifts in the lifestyle patterns of students. One of the primary areas of focus during this period is the mental health of this population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between positive and negative affect, self-esteem, and common mental disorders (CMD) among university health students. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study. The instruments included the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), as well as a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. The sample consisted of 396 university students from different health courses, with a predominance of female students, single individuals, self-reported white individuals, of the Catholic religion, without concomitant work activity, with a family income above five minimum wages, without their own income, residents of the city of Recife, with a predominance of the Medicine and Psychology courses, students who did not undergo psychiatric monitoring and those who underwent psychological monitoring. The sample was predominantly female, single, self-reported white, Catholic, and from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. The results demonstrated a correlation between the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RAS) and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the positive and negative affections of the Positive and Negative Affects Scale (PANAS). Additionally, a notable correlation was observed between the SRQ-20 and sociodemographic variables, including religion and family income. Furthermore, a significant association was identified between the SRQ-20 and other variables, such as psychiatric follow-up, clinical diagnosis, and substance use.
