Abstract

This study investigated the evidence of validity of the internal structure of the Career Preferences Inventory (IPC). The IPC was built based on hexagonal RIASEC model, which postulates six categories of interests and professional environments: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, entrepreneurial and conventional. The research was carried out with 899 elementary school students aged between 11 and 14 years old (M = 13.25; SD = 0.92), of which 56.6% were female, 40.2% were male and 3 .2% who preferred not to inform. Exploratory factor analysis with the parallel analysis method retained the six theoretically expected factors. The model fit statistics were quite satisfactory in the comparative and residual-based indices. Composite reliability values were high (between 0.85 and 0.95). Factor quality measures indicated replicability in future studies and support the use of the IPC for individual assessment. The correlations between the types of interests, for the most part, corroborated the hexagonal model. The results recommend the IPC for research and intervention in professional guidance in the age group studied, where RIASEC model reiterated its theoretical and empirical robustness.
