Abstract

The dialogue between parents and their children about race and ethnicity is referred to as "ethnic-racial socialization." There is evidence that this type of socialization has important consequences for the well-being and development of children and youth, which has contributed to the growth of research in this area internationally. Most of the research has focused on parents as socializing agents and has been conducted with ethnic-racial groups in the United States. This study aims to present a synthesis of the main findings from international literature on parental ethnic-racial socialization. Specifi cally, we sought to describe the main messages about race and ethnicity that parents transmit to their children, their explanatory factors, and an empirical framework about their consequences for the well-being and development of children and youth. This literature review enables understanding a series of reasons why parents engage or not in ethnic-racial socialization, and this knowledge will help to plan future research and interventions in the Brazilian context.
