Abstract

Sports performance is influenced by multiple skills. To improve psychological skills, several interventions have been developed, such as mindfulness training (MT), making it necessary to evaluate the effects of these interventions for future directions. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of MT on sports performance and on the psychological skills of athletes through a systematic review. This review followed the PRISMA statement. Randomized, non-randomized and pre-post interventions were included, which evaluated sports performance and psychological skills through quantitative instruments and procedures, with samples composed of professional and amateur athletes, available in Portuguese, Spanish and English, and published between 2010-2020. Searches were performed on MEDLINE, PsycNet, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus. The eligibility and quality of the studies were evaluated by two independent researchers. The searches identified 1579 articles and, after analysis, 32 studies were included. It was possible to identify positive effects of IT in different variables: 11 studies found positive effects on sports performance, 14 on the mindfulness state, 9 on the flow state, 5 on the reduction of competitive anxiety, 3 on stress, 4 on general anxiety and 2 on pessimism. MT can promote sports performance and psychological skills in athletes, but it is necessary to develop studies with better quality, especially in Brazil.
