Abstract

Women are a part of the population that use drugs harmfully and this fact fully justifies pursuing studies about the care that is offered to them by CAPS ADs. In this article we will analyze identity positions construed by the CAPS AD II professionals working at a town in Paraíba about women who consume alcohol and other drugs. Theoretically and methodologically our approach is based on the study of the production of meanings, departing from the analysis of discourse practices. As far as gender studies are concerned, we have mainly resorted to the contributions of post-modern feminism. We have also chosen a qualitative research approach and have carried out semi-structured interviews and seven professionals took part in it. The meanings produced about “what  it means being a woman” were concerned with the variety of demands attributed to women, particularly those within the family routine. This was introduced as a positive aspect in some narratives, and associated with “strength”. In other ones, however, it was seen as a negative one, for it generates an extra burden and suffering. On the other hand, as far as CAPS AD women users are concerned, it was mainly their vulnerabilities and the difficulties they face that were stressed. These women were seen as persons who have a more intense history of suffering, yet, their pains are not seen as legitimate.
