Promoting positive parenting practices: evaluation of an online interventional model for parents of teenagers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an online intervention aimed at developing positive parenting practices in parents of adolescents. Thirty-six caregivers of adolescents, in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability, living in the state of Bahia participated in the study. The intervention, based on Social Skills Theory and Behavioral Theory, took place in seven individual and online sessions, with pre-test and post-test measures in the experimental (n=24) and control (n=12) groups. To evaluate the intervention, the Parenting Styles Inventory and an online qualitative questionnaire were used. The results of the quantitative analysis did not reveal statistically significant differences between the groups after the intervention. On the other hand, qualitative data showed changes at the cognitive level, in addition to improvements in communication between caregiver and adolescent. It is concluded that the intervention reveals potential in promoting positive parenting practices but limitations of the study are highlighted.
