Abstract

The category of hope is central in Christian thought, as well as to most world religions. However, hope is often understood as an abstract, extramundane and metaphysical idea. Responding to this problem, this essay traces a dialogue between Rubem Alves and Gianni Vattimo in order to propose a concept of weakened hope, understanding that hope does not depend on the violence of metaphysics, but arises from concrete experiences of those bodies that are oppressed by totalitarian logics of exploitation. The essay follows this structure: we start from a comparison between the "logic of the dinosaur" and weakened thinking, we go through an investigation about the place of Christianity in the thought of Alves and Vattimo and, finally, we propose a reading about the interpretation of the future as weak hope.
