Abstract

Abstract: Female oral memory has never forgotten a dazzling moment that took place in the times of the desert experience: the five daughters of Salfaad demanded from Moses and the authorities the inheritance (naalah) of property ('ahutzah) (Nm 27,4) ). Now, that right belonged only to men. It was the principle of patrilineal succession that privileged males (Dt 21:15-17). Inquiring of God who said that the daughters of Salfaad were right, Moses, before the authorities and the community, gave them the property that was their father's inheritance. That changed everything. It was the victory of women in the face of patriarchal male arrogance. It was a new law that came from God (Num 27:7). In the post-exilic period (6th-4th century BC), an open priestly line drafted the final redaction, seeking to be faithful to oral accounts and older documents. However, another, more rigid, priestly line later took a step back (gloss), restricting inheritance of property only within the clan (Num 36).
