Abstract

The article critically analyzes the historical and symbolic construction of the figure of Jezebel, queen of Israel, showing how she was transformed into an archetype of the promiscuous, dangerous, and rebellious woman within Judeo-Christian traditions. This image results from Deuteronomistic, post-exilic, and patriarchal readings that interpreted her political and religious actions as a threat to the patriarchal order and the worship of Yahweh. The reinterpretation of Jezebel in Revelation 2:20 consolidated her stigma as a symbol of spiritual corruption and seduction, used to marginalize women who exercised power or autonomy. Historically, Jezebel’s figure served to criminalize transgressive women, from monarchs to actresses, for challenging patriarchal norms. In slaveholding America, the Jezebel stereotype was appropriated to hypersexualize Black women, justifying violence and rape, in contrast to the submissive “mammy” archetype. This dichotomy was used to suppress female autonomy and maintain the colonial and patriarchal order. The article concludes that deconstructing the cultural image of Jezebel is essential to break with discourses that associate femininity with perversion and rebellion with immorality, revealing how this biblical character has been instrumentalized as a tool of oppression up to the present day.
