Author Guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Articles that fail to meet the specifications below will be automatically rejected.

EDITORIAL STANDARDS
a) Revista de Estudos da Comunicação prioritizes the publication of original articles. In this case, articles must be submitted in conjunction with the Originality Statement and the Statement of Copyright Assignment, properly completed and signed (in PDF, in the submission environment). In case of more than one author, each one of the authors must sign a separate copy of the statement.
b) Revista de Estudos da Comunicação prioritizes the publication of articles in which at least one of the authors has a PhD degree. Special cases will be analyzed by the Editorial Board.
c) When submitting an article to the Magazine’s editorial process, it is requested that they are not submitted for analysis to other journals and printed or online publications.
d) Articles previously presented in scientific events of this field, which summary and/or full version have been published in annals, can be submitted to Revista Estudos de Comunicação, considering that it is up to the Editorial Board to decide whether or not they should be published, provided that the authors provide in a specific footnote the name of the event, and the date on which and location where they were presented. It is recommended that the version to be published in the periodical includes discussions and the progress obtained by discussing the article in the scientific event in which it was previously presented.
e) The analysis of the articles received by Revista de Estudos da Comunicação is based on the double blind review system. Articles received are initially analyzed by the Editors, and if compliant with the scope of the Magazine and the publication standards, and considered to be potentially publishable, they are anonymously submitted to the ad hoc consultants selected by the editor. Once the article has been analyzed, authors will be notified as to the decision made by the consultants.
f) The Editorial Board can eventually choose to publish articles submitted by authors upon invitation, in function of the alignment between their research and the scope of the magazine, their academic excellence, and the publication of researches previously presented in scientific events in the field of Communication. In these cases, the Editor and the Editorial Board are responsible for the assessment and edition of the articles.
g) By right, if need, articles can be submitted to ad hoc referees who are not members of the Scientific Board, provided that they have at least a PhD degree and are specifically related to the theme dealt with in the article in point.
h) The result of the assessment conducted by the referees can be in four different forms:
(1) Accepted without reformulations (or minimal reformulations);
(2) Accepted with reformulation;
(3) Resubmission suggested (to receive a new opinion);
(4) Rejected. The applicant will be notified if two referees reject it. If it has one acceptance and one rejection, it will be submitted to a third referee. If the acceptance includes modifications, editors will evaluate if the changes were satisfactorily met, or if it must be revised by the referee(s). Editors will maintain strict secrecy of the identity of the referee and the applicant.
i) Editors and referees reserve the right to propose changes to the originals, with the purpose of maintaining the quality of the publication, though respecting the style and opinions of the authors. Statements, opinions and concepts expressed in the articles are the full responsibility of the authors. The mere submission of the articles to Revista Estudos da Comunicação implies acceptance by the author of the standards expressed herein, and authorization to publish them.
j) Copyrights of the articles published are the property of Editora Universitária Champagnat, and the originals will be returned.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Presentation of articles
The text must be typed in Word for Windows, in Times New Roman font, size 12, spacing of 1.5, and justified text.
Pages must be number and configured in A4 size. Articles must contain 10 to 15 pages. The total number of pages must include summaries, references, illustrations, charts, tables, graphs, etc.
Two separate files must be submitted (in addition to the image files, if any): the identification document and the main document.

Identification document: only the first page of the article must contain information on the authorship and affiliation of the authors. This page must be configured to include the following information: title in Portuguese (Lower case, bold, Times New Roman font, size 14, initials in uppercase, centralized text) and in English (Lower case, italic, Times New Roman font, size 12, initials in uppercase, centralized text). The full name of each author must be presented from the third line on (centralized text), indicating in the sequence: education, maximum academic degree, institutional affiliation, and e-mail address of all authors. This page is the only part of the text that can include the identification of the author.
The main document of the article must be next in the sequence, from the second page on, without any reference to the authors or institutions of origin. Titles (in Portuguese and in English) must be included as in the identification document. Summaries must be included in the first page with keywords. The main body of the article must be next in the sequence with the following formatting: Times New Roman font, size 12, justified text, spacing of 1.5 all the way to the end (with the exception of direct references, with simple spacing).

Titles:
1st-level title (subtitle): no numbering, lowercase, bold, Times New Roman font, size 14, text justified to the left.
2nd-level title (subtitle): no numbering, bold, Times New Roman font, size 12, text justified to the left.
3rd-level title: must be avoided. Do not number if required. Use Times New Roman font, size 12, bold, and indented paragraph.
Do not start each section of the text on a new page; just separate the end of a section and the subtitle of the following section by inserting a space (1.5) between both of them.

Summaries
Articles accepted must provide two summaries, considering that one of them must necessarily be in Portuguese and the second in English. When the text is presented in English, in Spanish or in French, one of the summaries must be in its original language, a second summary in Portuguese, and a third one in English for texts in Spanish and in French. They must contain between 150 and 250 words, in Times New Roman font, size 11, simple spacing, and justified text. The last line must include three to five keywords with the first letter in uppercase, and separated by periods.

Notes
Notes included in the body of the article must be indicated in Arabic numerals superscripted immediately after the sentence which they are related, and limited to the minimum necessary. Notes must be contained in the footnotes of the same pages in which they are included. Footnotes with references regarding the authors must not be presented. They must be presented in Times New Roman font, size 10, simple spacing, and justified text.

Graphic materials
Illustrations, drawings, etc. must be submitted in digital form (1 to 2 Mb, .jpg or .tiff format), and it is not possible to use cell phone photos. Images must be mentioned in the text as figures or tables and present titles, sources, and if needed, legends.

Standards to present graphic materials

Charts and tables
The difference between charts and tables is that the former present textual information, and the latter contain numeric information.
They must be presented with their respective titles (immediately above the table, Times New Roman font, size 12, centralized text, only the first letter in uppercase) and source (immediately below the table, Times New Roman, size 10, centralized text). The expressions “table below/above” or “table as follows” must not be used, as during the editing process, it could be that their location does not correspond to the indication in the text.

Figures and graphs
They must be presented with the respective titles (immediately below the figure, Times New Roman font, size 12, justified text, only the first letter in uppercase) and source (immediately below the title, Times New Roman font, size 10, justified text, only the first letter in uppercase). The expressions “figure below/above” or “graph as follows” must not be used, as their location could be changed in the editing process.

Citations
References must be cited in the text according to the author-date system, in accordance with the ABNT standard, NBR 10520 Aug. 2002. Example:

When authors take part in the text: one author: “According to Freitas (2002, p. 524), [...]”; two authors: “According to Junqueira and Souza (2002), [...]”; more than three authors: “To Prado et al. (2002), [...]”.
When authors do not take part in the text: “com o advento da invenção dos tipos móveis por Gutemberg, a informação popularizou-se (BUFREN, 1997, p. 75)”.
Citations of citations: “According to Silva (1983 apud ABREU, 1999, p. 3), diz ser [...]”. Important: citations of citations must be avoided as much as possible.
Citations including up to three lines must be in the text between quotes; citations including more than three lines must be indented by 4 cm from the left margin, size 10.
Verbal information: when literal, it must appear between quotes and in italic.

References
Only citations included in the text must be referenced. Articles in the process of being prepared must be cited followed by the expression “in press”. Unpublished data must be followed by the expression “unpublished notes”; in this case, a letter from the author must be provided. References at the end of the article must be organized and presented in alphabetical order, according to the last name of the first author. The NBR 6023 standard of ABNT, 2002 must be met in the preparation of the references.

NOTE: We recommend that authors make a checklist, considering the following:

- Request you article to a professional involved in its analysis before submitting it to the magazine;
- Carefully check your article for compliance with the standards requested: font size of each item in the article, page numbering, notes in Arabic numerals, table and chart legends, page and paragraph formatting, citations on the body of the text, and references as requested. Check if all authors cited are included in the list of references at the end of the article.
- Ensure that all files are submitted separately, as requested (identification document, main document, images, and statement of originality).
