Abstract

Polydactyly is a congenital malformation of the phalanges, and it is rare in the equine species. However, it is believed that this genetic alteration is associated with a mutation in certain genes. This case report describes a 15-day-old male Quarter Horse foal presenting with clinical signs of polydactyly in both forelimbs, specifically on the medial aspect. The deformity was visible but showed distinct characteristics between the limbs, being more evident on the right side. To assess the extent of the polydactyly and aid in the precision of the surgical intervention, an X-ray examination was performed. As a result, the supernumerary digit was removed only from the right side, as it was the most developed and prominent. The postoperative clinical evolution was positive, and the animal was cleared for normal activities 21 days after surgery, as it showed no signs of pain or any other abnormalities.
