Abstract

Aiming to identify the methodological characteristics of instruments based on the Motivational Theory of Coping (MTC) by E. Skinner and collaborators, used to measure parental coping with chronic diseases and other child clinical conditions in national empirical studies, a scoping review was conducted, guided by the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. A search strategy was employed using the following descriptors and non-standardized terms: "coping," "coping strategies," "psychological adaptation," "parents," "mothers," "children," and "Motivational Theory of Coping" in the Index Psi Periódicos, Lilacs, SciELO, and gray literature databases. The eligibility criteria included national empirical studies in english, portuguese, or spanish, available in full text, online, with free access, without time restrictions, excluding theoretical and duplicate studies. Data were analyzed and synthesized both quantitatively and qualitatively. The final sample consisted of 10 studies. The results indicated that the included publications were developed between 2013 and 2021, with a predominance in the Graduate Programs in Psychology at PUC-Campinas and UFES. It was observed that the coping instruments used were not standardized, with the MTC-12 scale being the most applied; predominantly, mothers were the participants, dealing with various stressors related to their children’s health. This review identified that the field of coping studies lacks standardized instruments for measurement in the considered sample. The development of a national measurement instrument for this target audience, from a motivational perspective, may contribute to filling this gap.
