Abstract

Body image refers to the subjective perception that a person has of their own body, shaped by sensory, psychodynamic, and cultural factors. Over time, beauty standards and perceptions of the female body have undergone significant transformations. Historically, different cultural and social periods have shaped and redefined these standards, reflecting the predominant norms and values of each era, notably in the 21st century with the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the influence of these social networks on female body image perception and risk factors for eating disorders among 115 young adult Brazilian women, using a quantitative method with an original questionnaire based on the BSQ-34, EAT-26, and DSM-V instruments. The statistical results suggest evidence that body dissatisfaction caused by the constant pursuit of a beauty standard, pressure regarding body image, and changes in eating habits may be directly associated with the use of the studied social networks, along with the consumption of related media content and symptoms of eating disorders. The study revealed a sampling bias, with a predominance of young women aged 20 to 24 and residents of the North region, which may limit the generalization of the results. The data indicated that social media, especially Instagram and TikTok, significantly influence how women perceive their bodies, often promoting idealized aesthetic standards that contribute to body dissatisfaction and dysfunctional eating behaviors. The research highlighted that, despite high exposure to fashion and beauty content, there is a discrepancy between the desire to change one’s body and reported eating behaviors. The conclusion suggests the need for a more critical and conscious approach to social media consumption, emphasizing the importance of promoting diversity and body acceptance, as well as seeking professional support for overall well-being.
