Abstract

Given the historical concern with reducing behaviors disruptive to social coexistence,
researchers have investigated the relationship between moral emotions, such as guilt and
shame, and their impact on diminishing antisocial behaviors (ASB) while promoting prosocial
behaviors. This integrative literature review aimed to analyze the relationship between these
emotional responses and behavioral repertoires, focusing on studies published between 2018
and 2023. Findings indicate that guilt is positively associated with prosocial behaviors and
negatively associated with antisocial behaviors. In contrast, the relationship between shame
and these behavioral categories varied depending on contextual variables, such as the
presence of third parties. In addition to highlighting gaps in the existing literature, the findings
underscore relevant but underutilized contributions that may inform strategies to address
antisocial behavior.
