Abstract

This study aimed to understand the beliefs associated with the cure for homosexuality. A total of 237 university students (54.6%; Mean age = 21.9) from a public institution of João Pessoa - Paraíba were included in the sample, answering demographic and three open questions. The data were analyzed using the Iramuteq software, where a Descending Hierarchical Classification analysis was conducted, identifying six classes: (1) treatment impossibility to cure homosexuality, (2) there is no cure for what is not a disease, (3) homosexuality as an identity expression, (4) homosexuality as a natural condition, (5) therapy to deal with sexuality itself and (6) need for in-depth knowledge by prejudiced professionals. Results reinforced the unfavorability belief concerning professionals who support sexual reversion therapies, indicating that these therapies are not based on ethical and equality precepts, but on exclusionary and discriminatory practices. In this way, this study allows for reflection on the impacts that beliefs about the cure for homosexuality have on potential public policies aimed at homosexuals.
