Abstract

This study aimed the effects of a group intervention based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on psychological flexibility in older adults. This is a quasi-experimental mixed-method study design, presenting a Group Intervention Protocol for Psychological Flexibility with ten meetings for 10 participants aged between 66 and 73 years. The Acceptance and Committed Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II) and the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ-7) were used in three tests. Friedman ANOVAs and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks post hoc tests investigated the differences in the AAQ-II and CFQ-7 levels in the three evaluated times. Kendall tau-b correlation tests were also performed. There was a statistically significant difference between the three times (χ²(2) = 10.7; p = 0.005). There were correlations between the measurements at times 2 (τ = 0.707, p < 0.01) and 3 (τ = 0.847, p = 0.001). The results indicate that there was an increase in psychological flexibility from the increase in the levels of acceptance and committed action and cognitive fusion. It is considered that the objective was achieved, presenting limitations for generalization of the data and suggestions for future research.
