Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant transformations to society, including the implementation of social isolation measures to contain the spread of the virus. While necessary for public health, these measures had adverse psychological impacts, including effects on individuals' body image. This scoping review investigates and synthesizes evidence on the effects of social isolation on body image during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and the PRISMA-ScR checklist, the research included 13 studies that explored various aspects, such as the impact of social media, self-compassion, and effects on specific groups, including adolescents, women, pregnant individuals, and the LGBTQ+ community. The results indicate that social isolation exacerbated body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders in many individuals, particularly in contexts of high exposure to idealized images on social media. However, opportunities to promote a healthier body image through self-compassion strategies were also identified. This study highlights the importance of future research focused on fostering a positive self-image and supporting populations during times of crisis.
