Abstract

Technology has become an essential part of modern life, and excessive and disordered screen use by children is increasingly common. This study aimed to analyze how screen use, including electronic devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) and TVs, affects children’s executive functions, specifically investigating the impacted neuroanatomical areas, effects on quality of life, and Psychology's contributions to this issue. An integrative literature review was conducted, selecting and analyzing English-language articles from the past five years in the Scopus database using the descriptors "executive functions" OR "cognitive flexibility" OR "working memory" OR "inhibitory control" AND "screen use." Of the 19 articles found, 11 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results indicate the need for more studies to understand the effects of screen use on children. Although some studies report impairments in executive functions, such as working memory and inhibitory control, clear evidence of causality is still lacking. Other observed impacts include changes in sleep, eating behavior, academic performance, and social interactions.
