Abstract

The growth of online gambling in the Brazilian context raises concerns about this issue. In this sense, the present study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review regarding the psychosocial correlates of online gambling. Considering empirical studies published in the Pubmed and Scopus databases, in both Portuguese and English, the final sample consisted of 14 studies. The results indicated five categories of online gambling’s psychosocial correlates: psychological variables, relational variables, psychopathological symptoms, addiction, regarding other technology-mediated interactions, and variables related to gambling. Specifically, a higher frequency of online gambling was correlated with indicators of decreased psychosocial functioning, as well as issues such as, internet and gaming addiction. In this sense, the need for a more in-depth approach to demand in the Brazilian context is highlighted, as well as stricter legislation regarding these platforms.
