Abstract

Conducting a literature review on the habits associated with depression is essential to reflect on the impact of these habits on the depressive condition. A systematic review of articles in Portuguese was conducted in the Scielo, BVS, and BDTD databases; the selected studies collected data related to habits, which were subsequently synthesized and discussed. Eleven studies were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A correlation was observed between depression and the following habits: sleep patterns; physical activity; social isolation; smoking; alcohol consumption; diet. It was evidenced that alcohol and tobacco consumption and social isolation are associated with the maintenance of depressive disorder; on the other hand, physical activity and an adequate (rich and varied) diet are behaviors that contribute to the improvement of the depressive condition. Sleep, especially when of poor quality, was shown to be strongly linked to depressive symptoms, significantly impacting the quality of life and consequently worsening mood.
