Abstract

Dementia is characterized by cognitive impairments that affect functional independence, not explained by normal aging. In addition to deficits in memory and attention, impairment in social cognition stands out, reinforcing the inclusion of this construct in evaluative practice. The objective of this study is to enhance clinical practice, focusing on early diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and interventions in dementia. To achieve this, a scoping review was conducted according to the PCC mnemonic, using the descriptors "social cognition" and "dementia" in the PubMed/Medline databases. Eight studies met the eligibility criteria. The discussion of the results revealed that patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibited difficulties in recognizing emotions such as anger, fear, and disgust. The conclusion of the review indicated significant alterations in social cognition that impact other cognitive functions, interaction with the environment, and the diagnosis itself.
