Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed the reality and daily routine of the global population. This shift brought about the possibility of the emergence or worsening of various mental illnesses, such as OCD. The present study aimed to investigate the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, addressing the worsening of symptoms in patients with pre-existing diagnoses and the emergence of symptoms in individuals without a diagnosis. This is an integrative review conducted in the SciELO, MEDLINE, and LILACS databases, using descriptors in three languages and Boolean operators to search for articles published between 2020 and 2023. A total of 23 articles were selected, establishing a simple descriptive statistical analysis to outline the quantitative profile of the scientific production. Next, the textual corpus was analyzed using the IRaMuTeQ software, generating a Word Cloud and a Similarity Analysis. Bardin's Content Analysis allowed for a qualitative characterization of the literature and the delineation of two categories: 1) The impacts of the pandemic on patients with a previous OCD diagnosis; and 2) The emergence of OCD without prior symptoms. The results showed the strong influence of COVID-19 on obsessive-compulsive symptoms, especially in individuals with previous diagnoses who experienced a worsening of symptoms. There was also a significant increase in obsessive-compulsive symptoms in the general population, indicating that the worsening of OCD was observed both in individuals with a previous diagnosis and in people without prior symptoms before the pandemic.
