Abstract

Social media are one of the most popular forms of social interaction and leisure. Whether in interpersonal relationships or in the educational and work context, they occupy a significant space in both private and public life. However, this relevance can contribute to excessive use and, consequently, addiction. Considering this scenario, the present study aimed to review the literature regarding the relationship between social media addiction and anxiety. Research published between 2015-2024, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, and indexed on the Scopus and Pubmed platforms were considered. In total, thirty studies composed the sample. Results indicated, through mostly correlational and longitudinal studies, a significant positive correlation between social media addiction and anxiety symptoms, ranging from 0.15 to 0.73. Furthermore, longitudinal studies point to a cyclical relationship, where social media addiction is related to an increase in anxiety, which, in turn, increases addiction. Thus, it is necessary to understand this relationship in further detail, going beyond measuring symptoms and understanding possible moderators and mediators.
