Abstract

Maintaining a satisfactory sexual experience is signaled as a contributing factor to cognitive preservation during healthy aging. However, the normativity and stigmatization of what is characterized as an indicative of a healthy sexuality in senescence - especially in groups with cognitive impairments - are not properly recognized. The aim of this article is to distinguish and discuss the associations made in literature between the cognitive and sexual health of elderly women and men. Searches were carried out in PubMed, Psycnet, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Of the 4,568 articles located, 10 made up the final sample. Information was extracted regarding the authors, samples, sexual activities examined, instruments and results. In addition to the invisibility of sexual and gender minorities, there were complications with the parameters used to assess sexual activities in this age group. Although the results corroborate the protective association between sexuality and cognition, it is essential that the consensuality and quality of erotic interactions between elderly people with cognitive impairment receive prominence in quantitative research.
