Abstract

This study aimed to understand the relationships between guilt and anxiety in lying situations, with social desirability and locus of control, in addition to testing a moderation model of locus of control between guilt and anxiety in lying situations. 311 people from the general population participated, aged between 18 and 59, mostly female. In addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire, participants answered the Guilt Scale, the Anxiety in Lying Situations Scale, the Leverson Locus of Control Scale and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Results showed positive relationships between the dimensions of guilt and anxiety in lying situations, as well as that their total scores were negatively correlated with internality and social desirability, and positively with the externality of powerful others. Furthermore, it was observed that a higher level of internality strengthens the relationship between guilt and anxiety in lying situations. The study endorses knowledge of the relationships between the variables considered, contributes to the literature and can inspire future studies.
