Abstract

In recent years, a dimensional approach to psychopathology has been gaining strength, in contrast to the model that considers mental health problems based on a categorical approach. This theoretical study aimed to analyze this dimensional conception of psychopathology, formulated as a p factor in the literature, its foundations and empirical evidence, its relevance and evidence in childhood and adolescent psychopathology, and its clinical implications. Theoretical and empirical studies on the topic were reviewed, and the analyzed content was organized into three topics: the relevance of the hypothesis regarding the general factor of psychopathology and its meaning, the p factor and psychopathology in childhood and adolescence, and implications for research and the clinic with children and adolescents. The implications of this conception of psychopathology for research and psychological clinic are discussed, with emphasis on the planning of psychotherapies and the prevention of negative outcomes, such as dropout or non-adherence to treatments.
