Abstract

Fatphobia is described as discrimination that leads to social exclusion and denies fat people access. The aim of this documentary research was to analyze first and second instance court rulings related to fatphobia in order to identify the social representations of fat people in the rulings handed down. The first part of the research was to search for 15 court judgments covering the period from April 2018 to April 2023. A Categorical Thematic Analysis (ATC) was carried out to identify the social representations of the fat person present in the sentences. The analysis of the classes allowed us to understand the characteristics of the processes and the main arguments in the sentences. It was possible to observe in the speech present in the sentences that discrimination against fat people begins when looking for a job and lasts until they leave the company. In the sentences, the social representations of fat people refer to the disrespectful treatment suffered, the presence of fatphobia disguised as concern for health and the consequences of discriminatory practices for the well-being and health of workers.
