Abstract

By comprehending the escalating magnitude of the prison populace and, consequently, the engagement of family members within this system, the present study endeavors to scrutinize the perceptions of women in a matrimonial situation with incarcerated individuals pertaining to their social and affective support network. To accomplish this objective, an exploratory-descriptive qualitative investigation was conducted involving women affiliated with inmates from a Social Reintegration Center located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The data collection instruments encompassed a socio-demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview script, both meticulously devised by the researchers. Thematic analysis was employed as the analytical framework to elucidate the data. A cohort of six women, aged between 33 and 58, partook in the study. It was discerned that these women perceive their social and affective networks as limited in scope, predominantly constituted by female associates who surround them, primarily serving the functions of social support and cognitive guidance, albeit with variances across all roles assumed. Nonetheless, these networks are still regarded as precarious due to instances of discrimination, shame, and the burdensome nature of assumed roles. We underscore the significance of granting visibility to these women, who find themselves in a state of psychosocial vulnerability.
