Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the self-mutilation, suicidal ideation and suicide behaviors among Brazilian transgender or gender nonconforming adolescents. In 2021, the National Coordination of the Children, Adolescents and LGBTI+ Families Protection and Care interviewed 120 families of transgender or gender nonconforming children and adolescents; of those, 64 interviews were performed with the adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age, parents or tutors. The data shows that 50% of the sample had already presented self-mutilation behavior; 37.5% had idealized suicide and 17% had attempted suicide. It is possible to conclude that there is a need for more research, interventions and public policy aimed at this population since it is a vulnerable group who faces stigma, prejudice and social marginalization.
